Hinsdale is a village in Cook and DuPage counties in the U.S. state of Illinois. The population was 17,395 at the 2020 census, most of whom lived in DuPage County. The town has a rolling, wooded topography, with a downtown, and is a 22-minute express train ride to downtown Chicago on the Burlington Northern line. Hinsdale has a total area of 4.66 square miles (12.07 km²) (or 99.18%) is land, and 0.04 sq miles (0.10 km²), (or 0.82%) is water. It is located 20 miles (32 km) west of Chicago and is bordered by Western Springs to the east, Clarendon Hills and Westmont to the west, Oak Brook to the north, and Burr Ridge and Willowbrook to the south. It can be reached by highway from Interstate 294 or Interstate 55. The downtown area is located in the center of town and is remarkably little changed considering the many teardowns that have occurred in town. The village has restaurants, different types of shops, and various services, as well as the train station. The Robbins Park district between Garfield Street and County Line Road, is a National Register Historic District as well. The seven buildings individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places are the Orland Pett House at 329 E. Sixth St., and Mary Childs House at 318 S. Grant Ave.

Geography

Hinsdale is the primary city name, but also Oak Brk Mall, Oak Brook, Oak Brook Mall are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Village of Hinsdale. Hinsdale is located 20 miles (32 km) west of Chicago. It is bordered by Western Springs to the east, Clarendon Hills and Westmont to the west, Oak Brook to the north, and Burr Ridge and Willowbrook to the south. It can be reached by highway from Interstate 294 or Interstate 55. According to the 2021 census gazetteer files, Hinsdale has a total area of 4.66 square miles (12.07 km²) (or 99.18%) of which is land and 0.04 sq miles (0.10 km²), or 0.82%) is water. The eastern boundary of Hins Dale is I-294, and the western boundary is Route 83. The town has a population of 1,071. It has a history dating back to the 18th century, when it was first settled. It was the site of the Battle of the Bulge, which took place in 1881. The Battle was fought between the U.S. Army and the German Army over the town of Wurzburg, Illinois. The battle was won by the Germans in 1883, and was followed by the Second World War. The city is located on the banks of the Chicago River, which runs through the center of the town. It also has a lake, which is a tributary of the Des Plaines River. The village is home to the Chicago Cubs baseball team, which was founded in 1908. The Chicago Cubs won their first World Series game in 1909.

Demographics

As of the 2020 census there were 17,395 people, 5,809 households, and 4,817 families residing in the village. There were 6,124 housing units at an average density of 1,313.88 per square mile (507.29/km²) The racial makeup of the village was 77.33% White, 1.67% African American, 0.17% Native American, 12.44% Asian, 0,03% Pacific Islander, 1,27% from other races, and 7.09% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.45% of the population. The village's age distribution consisted of 32.2% under the age of 18, 4.0% from 18 to 24, 18.5% from 25 to 44, 31.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42.3 years. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.0 males. The average household size was 3.30 and the average family size was 2.94.The median income for a household in theVillage was $206,701. Males had a median income of $156,007 versus $56,484 for females. The per capita income for the Village was $106,061. About 0.5%. of families and 1.9%. of the residents were below the poverty line.

Housing and architecture

Hinsdale's downtown area is a National Register Historic District. The Robbins Park district just east of downtown between Garfield Street and County Line Road, as well as between Hinsdale Avenue and 9th Street, is a national historic district. The district includes two of seven buildings individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and seven of seventeen Hins Dale Historic Landmarks. The Hinsley Historical Society runs the Roger & Ruth Anderson Architecture Center, which advocates for the preservation of the town's historical architecture. The R. Harold Zook Home and Studio, which was originally located at 327 S. Oak Street and was saved from demolition in 2005 by relocation to the Katherine Legge Memorial Park, 5941 S. County Line road. The Orland P. Bassett House at 329 E. Sixth St., the Robert A. and Mary Childs House at 318 S. Garfield Ave., Immanuel Evangelical Church at 302 S. Grant St., Francis Stuyvesant Peabody House at 8 E. Third St. and the William Whitney House at 142 E. First St. are among the buildings on the N.R.H.S.'s list of historic buildings in the village. Government and infrastructure

Hinsdale was incorporated on April 1, 1873. The community is served by the United States Postal Service Hinsdale Post Office. Law enforcement is provided by the Hinsdal Police Department. The Hins Dale Fire Department was established in 1893. The village has a population of about 2,000. It is located on the banks of the Little Colorado River, which runs through the center of the town. The river is a tributary of the Mississippi River. The town is home to a number of historic sites, including the Old Towne of Hinsley, which dates back to the 17th century. It also has a cemetery, which was built in the 18th century by the town's first postmaster. It has a post office, which opened in 1873, as well as a fire department and a police department. The area was once known as "The Big Apple" because of its large number of apple orchards. It is now known as the "Little Town" due to the town's small size.
