Annapolis

Annapolis is the capital city of the U.S. state of Maryland and the county seat of Anne Arundel County. The 2020 census recorded its population as 40,812, an increase of 6.3% since 2010. The city served as the seat of the Confederation Congress, formerly the Second Continental Congress, and temporary national capital of the United States in 1783-1784. It was also the site of the 1786 Annapolis Convention, which issued a call to the states to send delegates for the Constitutional Convention to be held the following year in Philadelphia. St. John's College, founded 1696, is adjacent to the city limits. Annapolis is home to a large number of recreational boats that have largely replaced the city's seafood industry in the past few decades. It is also the home of the US Naval Academy, established 1845, which was founded in 1845. The town is located on the Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of the Severn River, 25 miles (40 km) south of Baltimore and about 30 miles (50 km) east of Washington, D.C., Annapolis forms part of the BaltimoreWashington metropolitan area. In 1694, soon after the overthrow of the Catholic government of second Royal Governor Thomas Lawrence, the third Royal Governor Francis Nicholson (1655-1727/28, in office: 1694-1698), renamed the town "Annapolis" after Princess Anne of Denmark and Norway, soon to become Queen Anne of Great Britain.

History

Annapolis is the primary city name, but also Cape Saint Claire, Cpe St Claire are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is City of Annapolis. Annapolis was founded in 1649 by Puritan exiles from the Province/Dominion of Virginia. In 1694, the third Royal Governor Francis Nicholson moved the capital of the royal colony, the Province of Maryland, to Anne Arundel's Towne and renamed the town "Annapolis" Annapolis was incorporated as a city in 1708. It was the temporary capital of United States after the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783. In 1786, delegates from all states of the Union were invited to meet in Annapolis to amend the Articles of Confederation. Annapolis is home to a large number of recreational boats that have largely replaced the seafood industry in the city. The city is located on the north shore of the Severn River on the middle Western Shore of the Chesapeake Bay. It is also on the south shore, known from 1683 as "Town at Proctor's", then "Townat the Severs" and "Town of the Severn" The city's name was changed to Annapolis in 1694 after Princess Anne of Denmark and Norway, soon to become Queen Anne of Great Britain (1665-1714, reigned 1702-1714) The city was the site of the first colonial naval battle in North America, the Battle of The Severn (1655) in which William Stone was defeated, taken prisoner, and replaced by Lt. Gen. Josias Fendall (1628-1687) as fifth Proprietary Governor.

Geography

Located 25 miles (40 km) south of Baltimore and 30 miles (48 km) east of Washington, D.C., Annapolis is the closest state capital to the national capital. The city is a part of the Atlantic Coastal Plain, and is relatively flat, with the highest point being only 50 feet (15 m) above sea level. Annapolis lies within the humid subtropical climate zone (Köppen Cfa), with hot, humid summers, cool winters, and generous precipitation year-round. In November 2020, NASA reported that Annapolis had 18 days of high-tide (non-storm-related) flooding from May 2019 to April 2020, an increase over 2018's 12 days, and higher than the 1995-2005 average of 2 days annually. The increase is attributed to sea level rise caused by climate change. Resultant flood damages caused local businesses to lose as much as $172,000 a year. On Naval Academy grounds, seawater came out of storm drains, with McNair Road and Ramsay Road flooding 20 times in 2020 and more than 40 times each in 2018 and 2019. Adaptation approaches such as sea walls and building up the height of roadways and athletic fields are predicted to last only a few decades. The highest point in the city is only 50ft (15m), with the lowest point being just over 20 feet (6.5 m) below sea level, and the city has a total area of 8.10 square miles (20.98 km²).

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 38,394 people, 16,136 households, and 8,776 families residing in the city. There were 17,845 housing units at an average density of 2,485.4 per square mile (959.6/km²) The racial makeup of the city was 60.1% White, 26.0% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.1%. Asian, 9.0%. from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people of any race were 22.9% of the population. The median income for a household was $49,243, and the median for a family was $70,984 (these figures had risen to $84,140 and $573,140, respectively, according to a 2007 estimate). The city's population is expected to rise to 40,812 by the 2020 census, and to 38,000 by the 2050 census. The city has a population of 16,000, and its population growth rate is estimated to be 3.7%. The city is located on the U.S.-Mexico border. It is one of the largest cities in the state, with an estimated population of 40,000. The population of the state in 2010 was 38,400, with a growth rate of 3.8% in the last decade. The state's population in 2000 was 35,838, and it is estimated that it will reach 40,200 by 2020.

Economy

Arts and culture

Annapolis has a thriving community theater scene which includes two venues in the historic district. A Christmas Carol has been a seasonal tradition in Annapolis since it opened at the Colonial Players theater in 1981. The Naval Academy Masqueraders, a theater group at the United States Naval Academy, produces one "main-stage show" each fall and student-directed one-act plays in the spring. Preble Hall, named for Edward Preble, houses the U.S. Naval Academy Museum, founded in 1845. The Banneker-Douglass Museum documents the history of African Americans in Maryland. Annapolis City Dock lies at the foot of Main Street that slopes down from Church Circle and St. Anne's Church. At the head of the dock is a small park with the Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Memorial with the Market House and a traffic circle in an expanse of asphalt surrounded by historic buildings. The Hammond-Harwood House, built in 1774 for Matthias Hammond, a wealthy Maryland farmer, was built by William Buckland from Andrea Palladio's Villa Pisani to accommodate American Colonial regional preferences. The final phase of the Paca Paca Garden encompasses an 18th-century Georgian mansion constructed by William Paca, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The garden has been restored to its colonial-era design and includes a terraced garden that includes a garden that has been transformed into a park. The Kunta.Alex Haley memorial commemorates the point of arrival of Alex Haley's African-American ancestor, whose story is related in the book Roots.

Sports

The Chesapeake Bayhawks are a Major League Lacrosse team. They play at NavyMarine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland. In 2013, the Bayhawks won the league's championship, the Steinfeld Cup, for the fifth time. The team moved from Washington, D.C. to the Annapolis area in 2010. The Bayhawks play in the National Lacrosse League (NLL) for the first time in 2011. They are currently in their fifth season in the NLL, and have won four league titles. The NLL is the second-highest-scoring league in the world. They have won the championship five times, including the last four in a row from 2012 to 2013. The league has a total of nine teams in the league. The most recent win was in 2013, when they won the title for the sixth time. They also won the Steinfield Cup in 2012. The club has won the NL championship four times, the most recent in 2012 and 2013, and the league championship in 2011 and 2012. It has also been runner-up three times in the last five years, in 2012, 2013 and 2014. It is the only NLL team to win back-to-back league titles in each of the last three seasons. The last time was in 2008 and 2009, when the team was in its third season. The franchise has won at least one game in every season since moving to Annapolis. It also has won two league titles, in 2007 and 2008, and one in 2009.

Parks and recreation

The city boasts over 200 acres (81 ha) of parkland, with the largest being the 70-acre Truxtun Heights Park. Quiet Waters Park, a 340-acre regional park run by Anne Arundel County, offers water access, a playground area, over six miles of paved trails, and ice skating rink, and a dog beach.Annapolis is home to many seasonal or holiday-themed events and festivals that take place throughout the year. Some examples are the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade, May Day, and United States Naval Academy Commissioning Week. The city is also home to the U.S. Naval Academy, which opened its doors to the public in 1864. The Naval Academy is located in Annapolis, Maryland, and is a part of the District of Columbia. It is located on the Maryland-Virginia border and is known as the "Gateway to the Sea" to the Chesapeake Bay. It was the site of the Battle of the Bulge, which took place between 1864 and 1866, and was the first battle of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The town is also the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence, which was signed by George Washington in 1783. It has been home to a number of historic sites, including the Maryland State House, which dates back to 17th century. It also is the home of the National Museum of Natural History, which is dedicated to the American Revolution and the American Civil War.

Government

Annapolis is governed via the weak mayor system. The city council consists of eight aldermen who are elected from single member wards. While Annapolis is the state's only capital, some administrative offices, including a number of cabinet-level departments, are based in Baltimore. The state legislature, governor's office, and appellate courts are located in Annapolis. The mayor is elected directly in a citywide vote. Since 2008, several alderman have introduced unsuccessful charter amendments to institute a council-manager system, a move opposed by both Democratic mayor Joshua J. Cohen and his Republican successor Mike Pantelides. The city is home to the U.S. Naval Academy, which was founded in 1788. The Naval Academy is located in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, and is the home of the Naval Academy Maritime Museum, which opened in 1787. It is the only state capital in the state, and the state legislature is based there. A number of government departments, including the state attorney general's office and the Maryland Supreme Court, are headquartered in Baltimore, the state capital of Maryland, which is the seat of the Maryland House of Representatives. The Maryland Senate is also based in Maryland, but it is not the state house of representative that represents the state of Maryland. The governor is based in the city, as is the lieutenant governor, who is the chief executive of the state. The  state treasurer, who heads the Maryland Department of Revenue, is based at the Maryland State House of Finance.

Education

Annapolis is served by the Anne Arundel County Public Schools system. Annapolis High School has an internationally recognized IB International Program. St. Anne's School of Annapolis, Aleph Bet Jewish Day School, Annapolis Area Christian School, St. Martins Lutheran School, Severn School, and St. Mary's High School (Annapolis, Maryland) are private schools in the Annapolis area. The Key School, located on a converted farm in the neighborhood of Hillsmere, has also served Annapolis for over 50 years. Mary E. Moss Academy, an alternative school which has around 160 students ranging grades 69, is also in theAnnapolis area and serves students in grades 69 and up. The city is located on the Chesapeake Bay and is located in Maryland's Eastern Seaboard. It has a population of 2.2 million. The population of the city is 2.3 million. It is located near the Ches Chesapeake River and the Maryland-Maryland border. The area is home to the Naval Academy, which was founded in 1788. The Annapolis Police Department has been in existence since 1788 and is based in Annapolis since 1791. The police department has a force of around 2,000 officers. The town has one of the largest police forces in the United States, with more than 1,500 officers. It also has the largest fire department in the U.S., with over 1,000 firefighters. The community has a history of being involved in the Civil War and World War II.

The UV Index has been defined by the WHO (www.who.int/news-room/questions-and-answers/item/radiation-the-ultraviolet-(uv)-index) and is uniform worldwide.

The Comfort Index (higher=better) is 42, where higher values mean a more pleasant climate. The Comfort Index measure recognizes that humidity by itself isn't the problem.
