Lanham

Lanham is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Prince George's County, Maryland. As of the 2020 United States Census it had a population of 11,282. The Thomas J. Calloway House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. The New Carrollton station (the terminus of the Washington Metro's Orange Line) as well as an Amtrak station are across the Capital Beltway. Doctors Community Hospital is located in Lanham. Residents of Lanham CDP are divided between James McHenry Elementary School and Seabrook Elementary School. All residents are zoned to Thomas Johnson Middle School and DuVal High School. There is a private Catholic school, Academy of Saint Matthias the Apostle. The U.S. Postal Service operates the Lanham Seab rook Post Office in Lan Ham CDP. The community is home to 2U, Shoppers Food & Pharmacy, reverse logistics company Optoro, software company Vocus, media company Radio One and publisher Rowman & Littlefield. Lanham has a total area of 3.6 square miles (9.2 km²), of which 3.5 square miles is land and 0.02 square miles, or 0.05 km², is water. It is located on the Maryland-Virginia border and is part of the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. The city's population is about 11,000, according to the 2010 US Census. It has an estimated population of about 10,000.

History

Lanham is the primary city name, but also Glenarden, Lanham Seabrook, Seabrook are acceptable city names or spellings. The Thomas J. Calloway House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. It was built in the early 1900s. The house is located on the former site of the Calloway family home. It is now a private residence, owned by a family of African-Americans. The Calloway house was listed in 2005 on the Register of National Historic Places. Geography

Lanham is located on the Ohio River, which flows through the town. The town is home to the Lanham High School, which was founded in 1881. The school is located in the town's central area. It is also home to Lanham's high school, which opened in 1883. The high school has a football field, a baseball field, and a field hockey field. It also has a baseball diamonds, which were built in the late 19th and early 20th century. It has a post office, which closed in the early 1980s. It was re-opened in the mid-1990s and is now a part of the town of Lanham, Ohio, with a population of about 1,200. It's also home of the Lan Hammersley School, a public school, and Lanham Elementary School, where students learn to read and write English. The Lanham School District was established in 1891. It became a public high school in 1894. It now has a high school and a middle school, with an enrollment of around 1,100 students. The village has a golf course, which is open to the public, and also has an elementary school, where children can learn to play the game.

The town has the second highest crime rates in the state, after Bowie, with an average of 4.7 per cent. The lowest rate for the county is 4.3 per cent; the highest is 5.1 per cent in Bowie.

Economy

EdTech company 2U (Nasdaq: REVU), Shoppers Food & Pharmacy, reverse logistics company Optoro, software company Vocus, media company Radio One and publisher Rowman & Littlefield are based in Lanham. Lanham is home to a number of high-tech companies, including 2U, Optoro and Vocus. The town is also home to the U.S. Postal Service, which has been based in the town for more than 100 years.

The sixth and seventh most popular religion are the Catholics and the Protestants.

Education

Prince George's County Public Schools serves Lanham CDP. Residents of the CDP are divided between James McHenry Elementary School and Seabrook Elementary School. All residents are zoned to Thomas Johnson Middle School and DuVal High School. There is a private Catholic school, Academy of Saint Matthias the Apostle. Washington Bible College/Capital Bible Seminary/Equip Institute also serves the area. There are no high schools in the area, but there are two middle schools and one high school. The area also has a number of private schools, including two parochial schools and a private day school for children with learning disabilities, as well as a private high school for adults with learning difficulties. The CDP is home to the National Park Service's Lanham Park, which is located in the north of the town. It is the site of the Lanham Airport, which was built in the early 1900s. The Lanham River runs through the center of the city, and runs into the Potomac River in the south. It was once the source of the Rappahannock River, which flows through the town of Lanham and into the Maryland River. The Linn River, a tributary of the Littleton River, runs through Lanham, and was once a source of water for the Linn Creek area. It has been converted into a park in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and is now home to a park that is part of the Washington Metropolitan Area.
