Clarkston is a northern suburb of Detroit, located about 34 mi (55 km) northwest of downtown Detroit. At the 2010 census, the city had a population of 882. With a total land area of 0.44 square miles (1.14 km²), Clarkston is the smallest city by land area in the state of Michigan. The Clarkston Village Historic District includes Buffalo Street, Church Street, Clarkston Road, Depot Road, Holcomb Street, Main Street (M-15), Miller Road, Waldon Road and Washington Street. The Village of Clarkston was designated a Michigan State Historic Site on January 16, 1976 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 15, 1979. The city of Petersburg has a larger land area but a smaller total area (when water area is included) than Clarkston. Clarkston has a total area of 1.2 square miles, while Petersburg contains no water and has atotal area of just 0.48 square miles. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the city's population at 882 at the 2010 Census. The average household size in the city was 2.19, with the average family size at 2.80. The median age in the City was 45.4 years, with 21.4% of residents under the age of 18 living with them, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The racial makeup of the city. was 97.7% White, 0.2%. African American,0.1% Native American, 0,6% Asian, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.8%.

History

The Clarkston Village Historic District includes Buffalo Street, Church Street, Clarkston Road, Depot Road, Holcomb Street, Main Street (M-15), Miller Road, Waldon Road and Washington Street. The Village of Clarkston was designated a Michigan State Historic Site on January 16, 1976 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 15, 1979. The Clark brothers platted a tract of land for a village and gave it the name Clarkston in 1842. In 1992, the village ofClarkston was incorporated as a city. The village was incorporated in 1884 as a village. The first house in the community was built in 1830. The Independence post office was transferred to the community and assumed its name on December 12, 1840. In 1832, Butler Holcomb built the second house and a sawmill. The community was named after the Clark brothers, who platted the land for the village. It is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, near the city of Saginaw and the town of Saugatuck. The town has a population of about 2,000 people, with the majority living in the central part of the town. The city is home to the Clarkston High School, which was founded in 1832. The school is located on the edge of the village and has a junior high and high school. The high school has a football field and a track and field field, which were built in the late 1800s. It was the first high school in the area to be built.

The city of Petersburg has a larger land area but a smaller total area (when water area is included). Clarkston contains no water, while Petersburg has no water and a totalArea of 1.24 km². Clarkston has a population of 1,071, and Petersburg has 1,081. The population of Clarkston was 1,094, and the population of Petersburg was 2,084. The number of residents per square mile is 1,061, with the number of people living in the city at 1,051.Clarkston is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and is located on the Michigan Turnpike. It is the largest city in the Lower Peninsula, with an area of 2,816 square miles. The town has a water supply of 0,074 square miles, which is the third largest in the U.S. after Detroit and Dearborn. It also has a large amount of land, with 0.44 square miles of land and 0.07 square mile of water, making it one of the smallest cities in Michigan. It was the first city in Michigan to have a population over 1,000 in the early 1900s. The first city to reach that level of population was Clarkston, which was founded in 1838.

About 0.4% of residents were under the age of 18 and 4.9% of those age 65 or over. The average household size was 2.19 and the average family size was2.80. The median age was 41.4 years. For every 100 females there were 89.7 males. For each 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.3 males. The population was 96.78% White and 0,31% African. American. The gender makeup ofthe city was 48.6 per cent male and 51.4 per cent female. In the city the population was spread out, with 25.7 per cent under age 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 27.7 percent from 25 to 44, 28.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.4 percent who were 65 years of age or older.

Education

The city's public school district is the Clarkston Community School District. Everest Collegiate High School and Academy is in nearby Independence Township. The city is home to a number of charities, including the Greater Clarkston Foundation and Clarkston United Methodist Church. The Clarkston Public Library is located in the city's downtown area. It is the only public library in Clarkston, with a collection of more than 1,000 books. It also has a branch in Independence Township, where it serves as a drop-in center for the local community. It has a library in the nearby town of Independence, which has a population of about 2,000. The town also has an elementary and middle school, as well as a high school and a middle and high school in the town of Clarkston. In the summer, the city has an annual flea market, which attracts visitors from all over the U.S. and around the world.
