Saline

Saline (suh-LEEN) is a city in Washtenaw County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 8,948 at the 2020 census. The city is popular for its annual Celtic Festival. Saline has sister cities Brecon, Wales, United Kingdom (established 1966) and Lindenberg, Germany (established 2003) The city has an area of 4.41 square miles (11.42 km²), of which 4.33 square miles of land and 0.08 square mile (0.21 km²) (1.81%) is water. The Saline River runs through the city, and US 12 runs briefly through the center of the city. In 1875 Salinians built the Second-Empire frame, 2+12-story residential building, the Davenport House, a.k.a. Curtis Mansion. The town has had its own newspaper since ca. 1874 but the Saline Reporter was shuttered by its owner, Digital First Media, in 2014. In 1931, the Village of Saline became the City of Salina. In 2010, there were 8,810 people, 3,699 households, and 2,336 families residing in the city; the population was 93.6% White, 1.4% African American, 0.2% Native American, 2.5% Asian, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.6%. The city was 47.0% male and 53% female.

History

Before the 18th century, Native Americans traveled to what is now Saline to hunt wildlife and gather salt from the salt springs they found nearby. Europeans settled the area in the 19th century. In 1875 Salinians built one of the city's most famous landmarks, the Second-Empire frame, 2+12-story residential building, the Davenport House, a.k.a. Curtis Mansion. Saline has had its own newspaper since ca. 1874 but the Saline Reporter was shuttered by its owner, Digital First Media, in 2014. The Saline Post, an independent outlet, now serves the community. The city is popular for its annual Celtic Festival, which attracts people from all over the U.S. and its sister cities Brecon, Wales, United Kingdom (established 1966) and Lindenberg, Germany (established 2003). Saline is located in the Upper Great Lakes region of the state of Michigan, and is located on the shores of the Allegheny River, which is a tributary of the Ohio River. It is the site of the National Park Service's Saline Fisheries Research Station, which conducts research on fish in the area. The City of Saline was officially established in 1832, and in 1931 it became a city. The town is home to the University of Michigan's College of Fisheries and Aquaculture, which was founded in 1875. The University of Wisconsin-Saline has a chapter of the College of Arts and Sciences, which opened in 1881.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has an area of 4.41 square miles (11.42 km²) The Saline River runs through the city. US 12 (East Michigan Avenue) runs briefly through the center of the city, and the city is located on the U.S. Census Bureau's definition of a "major city" is defined as a city that has a population of at least 1,000. The city's population was 1,071 at the 2010 census. It has a total area of 5.33 square miles, of which 4.33 sq miles (11.21 km²), is land and 0.08 sq miles(0.21km²) (1.81%) is water. It is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, on the shores of the Saline river. The town is home to the University of Michigan at Flint, which was founded in 1872. The U.N. World Heritage Site is located near the city's center. It was established in 1874. It's one of the oldest cities in Michigan. It also is the site of the Michigan Medical School, which dates back to 1875. The state's first post-secondary school was opened in 1881. It opened in the town's center in 1883. It became the first post school in the state to open in 1885. It closed in 1891. It reopened in 1894. It remains one of Michigan's oldest cities, along with Flint.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 8,810 people, 3,699 households, and 2,336 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 93.6% White, 1.4% African American, 0.2% Native American, 2.5% Asian, and 1.8% from two or more races. There were 3,048 households, out of which 38.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 3.00. In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.6%. under age 18, 5.7%. from 18 to 24, 32.6. from 25 to 44, 21.8%. from 45 to 64, and 11.3% 65 years old or older. The median age was 36.1. For every 100 females, there are 86.6 males. The city is served by the Ann Arbor Railroad, which also operates as far as Maple Road in the north. Only a portion of the railroad is used as a siding for the Faurecia Plant and only freight service is offered. The town is located on the Michigan Turnpike, which runs from Detroit to Detroit. The turnpike runs through the city and connects to the Detroit and Detroit-Battle Creek areas via the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel and the Detroit River. It was built in the 1880s and is one of the oldest cities in Michigan.

Education

K3 elementary schools operated by the district include Harvest, Woodland Meadows, and Pleasant Ridge. Heritage School (45), Saline Middle School, and Saline High School (in Pittsfield Charter Township) serve the city. Saline Area Schools operates the public schools. The city's public schools are located in the town of Saline. The school district is part of the Saline School District, which was formed in the 1950s. The district has been in operation since the 1960s. It is the largest school district in the state, with more than 2,000 students. It also has a middle school, high school, and elementary school. It has been the city's school district for more than 30 years. The public schools were founded in the 1970s, and the district has a history of being successful. It was the first school district to open in the city, and it is one of the largest in the United States. It opened its first elementary school in 1978. It closed its last school in the 1990s, leaving the city with a total of 12 schools. It now has a high school and middle school with about 1,200 students. The high school is in Pittsfeld Charter Township, which has a population of about 2,500. There are no high schools in Saline, but there are several middle schools and one high school. There is also a middle and high school in a neighboring town, which is in a different township. The schools are open to the public in the evenings and weekends.

The city is also twinned with the town of Lindenburg in Germany, which is located near the Rhine-Ruhr region of the state of Hessen. The two cities are also sister cities in Germany and the Netherlands, and have been so since the 1970s and 1980s.
