Dearborn Heights is a city in Wayne County in the U.S. state of Michigan. With a population of 63,292 at the 2020 census., it is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. It is considered a bedroom community. In 2014 the Dearborn Heights director of community and economic development, Ron Amen, stated that Arabs are about 25% of the city's population. The city was incorporated in 1960 from two discontinuous sections of Dearborn Township and a quarter-mile connecting strip of land from the village of Inkster. Inkster, a predominantly black community, filed a lawsuit, claiming that the shape of Dear Born Heights reflected a racial gerrymander. The Michigan Supreme Court held that Inkster had failed to demonstrate any legally cognizable harm and dismissed the lawsuit. In 2010, there were 57,774 people, 22,266 households, and 14,591 families living in the city. In 2000, there was 58,264 people, 23,276 households, and 15,781 families. The median age in theCity was 38.3 years. The gender makeup of the City was 48.4% male and 51.6% female. The racial makeup was 91.64% White, 2.12% African American, 0.1% Native American, 1.7% Asian, and 1.0% from other races, and 2.8% Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.7%. In 2014 Arab Americans had been moving into the city, with the north end having more Arabs compared to the south end. The southern portion of the. city is in the watershed of the north branch of the Ecorse Creek (also known as Ecorse River). The area surrounding the ecorse is subject to flooding.

History

Dearborn Heights is the primary city name, but also Dearborn Hts are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is City of Dearborn Heights. Dearborn Heights was incorporated from the two discontinuous sections of Dearborn Township and a quarter-mile connecting strip of land from the village of Inkster. Inkster, a predominantly black community, filed a lawsuit, claiming that the shape of Dear Born Heights reflected a racial gerrymander. The Michigan Supreme Court held that Inkster had failed to demonstrate any legally cognizable harm and dismissed the lawsuit. The residents approved Dearborn Heights' incorporation on an election held June 20, 1960, which is the official date of incorporation. The city was incorporated on March 4, 1960. It was named after the city of Detroit, Michigan, where it was founded in 1858. It is the largest city in Michigan with a population of more than 1.5 million people. The population of the city was 1.6 million in 1960. The town is now home to the Detroit Lions, the Detroit Red Wings, and the Detroit Pistons. It has a population in excess of 2,000 people and is home to a number of colleges and universities, including Michigan State, Michigan Tech, Michigan State University, and Michigan Tech. It also has a chapter of the NAACP, the Michigan chapter of which is based in Dearborn, Michigan. The community was incorporated in March 1960, and was named for the city's founder, William "Bill" Dearborn. The current mayor of the town is John "Jack" Wojciechowski, who served as mayor from 1959 to 1964. He was elected to a second term in 1964.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.75 square miles (30.43 km²) of which 11.74 square miles is land. The southern portion of the city is in the watershed of the north branch of the Ecorse Creek (also known as Ecorse River) The area surrounding theEcorse is subject to flooding. The northern portion of. the city are in the Rouge River watershed. The city is located on the banks of the River Rouge, a tributary of the Arkansas River. It has a population of 2,816. It is one of the smallest cities in the state, with a population in excess of 1,000. It was the first city in Louisiana to be annexed by the state in 1859. It also is the largest city in the South, with 2,715 people living in the city as of the 2010 United States Census. Its population was 2,917 as of 2010. It had a population loss of 1.2% in the year 2000. It suffered a population gain of 0.1% from the year 2001 to the year 2002. It lost 0.01% of its population in the decade 2000 to the 2010 U.N. Census. It now has 1,038 residents, down from 1,071 in the 1990s. The area is home to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, which was founded in 1858. The university has a history of being a leader in African-American studies.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 57,774 people, 22,266 households, and 14,591 families living in the city. The city has a population density of 4,921.1 inhabitants per square mile (1,900.0/km²) The city's median income for a household in 2010 was $48,222, and the median for a family was $54,392. About 4.4% of families and 6.1% of those under the age of 18 were below the poverty line, including 8.5% ofThose under 18 and 4.7% who are 65 or older. In 2010, the average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.04. The median age in theCity was 38.3 years. The racial makeup of the City was 91.64% White, 2.12% African American, 0.37% Native American, 2.24% Asian, 1.0% from other races, and 2.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.39%.

Economy

As of 2014 the largest employer in the city is the city government itself. The second largest employer is H.Y.P.E Athletics, which has over 200 employees. The city has a population of 4,000, with the majority of people living in the central part of the city. The average income is $30,000. The unemployment rate is 2.7 per cent. The poverty rate is 1.8 per cent, and the unemployment rate has been at 2.4 per cent for the past three years. The school district has a budget of $1.2 million. The university has a student population of 2,500, with an average of 3,000 students per year. It has an unemployment rate of 1.9 per cent and a poverty rate of 2.8per cent. It is the second largest city in the state, after the city of Bakersfield, California, with a total population of 5,856. The economy is the third largest in the county, after Bakersville, California and Kern County, California. The town has a GDP of $2.1 billion. The population is 4,827, with its unemployment rate at 1.6 per cent; it has a Poverty Rate of 0.7. The state has a poverty level of 1 per cent (the lowest in the country). The city's unemployment rate was 1.7per cent as of 2014, and it is expected to be 1.5 per cent by the end of 2015.

Dearborn Heights Tax Increment Finance Authority (TIFA)

The Dearborn Heights Tax Increment Finance Authority is a community service office branched out of the State of Michigan. The goal is to encourage economic revitalization and historic preservation. TIFA remains established to continue efforts in elevating the standard of living for all residents of the district. Since TIFA's establishment in 1986, many projects have been completed, including the new Justice Center and JFK Library. The Business Improvement Program was launched in June 2008. It is a grant program designed to assist business owners in the TIFA district who wish to repair structural or exterior deterioration of their buildings. The PAL is not to promote or advocate businesses, but rather to avoid vacancies and assist in the occupancy of commercial buildings in the district, in turn stimulating the local economy. It provides the browser with property specifications and contact information for the appropriate real estate agent. A property availability list (PAL) is regularly updated on theTIFA website. It's a comprehensive list of all commercial and industrial parcels for sale in theDistrict. It also includes the name of the property, the address, and the phone number for the agent who will be caring for the property.

Education

Dearborn Heights is divided into five school districts. Residents in Dearborn Public Schools are zoned to either River Oaks (in Dearborn Heights), Haigh, or Lindberg elementary schools. A small portion is within the Wayne-Westland Community Schools. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit operates two Catholic K-8 schools: St. Anselm Catholic School and St. Linus Catholic School. Global Educational Excellence operates one charter school: Global Heights Academy (K-5) Henry Ford College was located in the north end of the city from the mid-1970s until 2014, when it was moved to a new campus in Westland. Dearborn has two public libraries: the Caroline Kennedy Library and the John F. Kennedy Jr. Library. It also has two private libraries: Dearborn Center for Math, Science and Technology and John Glenn High School. It has one private school: Universal Learning Academy, which has two campuses in Dear born Heights and Westland, and one in Westlands, which had two campuses before 2011. It is now in the Westland area, and the private school is no longer in the Dearborn area, but it is in the same district as Universal Learning. It was established in the 1950s and closed in 2019. It once operated St. Mel Elementary School, which closed in 2005; St. Sebastian School, established in 1950s, closed in 2011. The public library system operates two libraries: Caroline Kennedy and John Kennedy Jr., which are in the city's north end.
