Hernando

Hernando is a city in, and the county seat of, DeSoto County, which is on the northwestern border of Mississippi, United States. The population was 14,090 at the 2010 census, up from 6,812 in 2000. Hernando was first called Jefferson by its new European American settlers. It was renamed as H Fernando in 1832, after the Spanish explorer Hernandi de Soto. During the Great Migration of the first half of the 20th century, many blues musicians migrated north, taking their music to Chicago and helping create the culture of that city. U.S. Route 51 and the I-55 freeway traverse the city from north to south. The county courthouse is located within Hernande's historic downtown square. It is located at the intersection of Commerce Street and present-day U.S. 51. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 25.8 square miles (66.9 km²), of which 25.7 square miles [66.6 km²) is land, and 0.1 square miles, or 0.39%, is water. The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters, with a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps. In the city, the population was spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, and 8.7% from 25 to 44.

History

Chickasaw people had long inhabited this area. French and French Canadians had a wide trading network with various American Indian tribes. Most of the tribe were moved to west of the Mississippi River in Indian Territory. Many African Americans had developed a strong musical tradition in the area. During the Great Migration of the 20th century, many of these musicians moved to Chicago, where they created the culture of the city. The city was first called Jefferson by its new European American settlers. It was renamed Hernando in 1832, after the first European to explore the Mississippi. It is now known as the city of the same name after the Spanish explorer Hernan de Soto, who first visited the area in 1799. The town is now part of the state of Mississippi. The Mississippi River runs through the center of the town, which was once known as Jefferson, Missouri. It has a population of about 100,000 people and is located in the heart of the Great Lakes region of the U.S. and the mid-Mississippi River valley. The area was once called the Illinois Country, after its French colonial settlers. The name was later changed to the City of the Lakes, which is where the city is now located. It also has a French-speaking population, which moved to the north in the 19th century after the French left the area to live in New France. The current city of Chicago is named after the city's French-American residents, who came to the area during the French colonial period.

Geography

Hernando is in the center of DeSoto County, bordered to the north by the city of Southaven. It is 15 miles (24 km) via the same road to the south to Senatobia. It was the site of the deadliest shooting incident in U.S. history, with more than 1,000 people killed in the line of duty in the early 1990s. The town is located on the Mississippi River, which flows through DeSotia County. The Mississippi River is a tributary of the Cumberland River. It runs through the city, which is located in the eastern part of the state. The river has been the source of much of the flooding in the area in recent years. It also has been a source of controversy in the past, as it has been linked to the flooding of the Little River Gorge in the late 1990s and early 2000s. In the early 1900s, the area was known as the "Little River Valley" because of the small amount of water in the region. The area is now known as "The Little River Valley," and the name is derived from the name of a small river that runs through it.

The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there are 98.8 males.
