Broadview Heights

Broadview Heights is a city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States, and a suburb in the Greater Cleveland area. The city's population was 19,936 at the 2020 census. Broadview Heights was officially incorporated as a village on December 17, 1926 after a petition and an election among residents of the western portion of Brecksville Township. The current City Hall campus was purchased by the city in 1996 for $750,000. In 1998, Recreation and Human Services moved to the Thorin Building, and City Hall was moved onto the campus in 1999. In 2010, there were 19,400 people, 7,698 households, and 5,255 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 91.0% White, 2.1% African American, 5.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.8%. The city is located at 41°1919N 81°4036W (41.321827, -81.676595). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.05 square miles (33.85 km²), of which 13.00 square miles is land and 0.02 sq miles (0.05 km²) is water. In the city, the average household income is $38,647 (it was $29,440 in 2000).

History

Broadview Heights is the primary city name, but also Broadview Hts, Cleveland are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Broadview Heights, Ohio. In 1811, Seth Paine, a surveyor sent by Colonel John Breck, became the first white man to settle the area. A school was established in 1815 in a since-demolished building located at the intersection of Broadview Road and Avery Road. Broadview Heights was officially incorporated as a village on December 17, 1926 after a petition and an election among residents of the western portion of Brecksville Township. The current City Hall campus was purchased by the city in 1996 for $750,000. During the 2018 year, the city renovated and added on to the dated recreation center by adding new basketball courts, a new work out area, and a new pool. The city demolished the unused portion of the former hospital and reclaimed the land in 2006. In 1960, on the basis of census results indicating population growth, Broadview heights became a city. In 1998, Recreation and Human Services moved to the Thorin Building, and City Hall was moved onto the campus in 1999. In 2006, the City demolished the empty part of the Broadview Developmental Center, a hospital which had closed in the 1980s, stood on the site. Following the purchase, the site became known as Broadview Center and was renovated. In 2008, the current city hall was moved to its current location on Broadview Avenue. In 2012, the new City Hall building was completed. It is located on a site that was previously used by the police department and other local organizations. In 2010, the building was renovated and became the city's new recreation center.

Geography

Broadview Heights is located at 41°1919N 81°4036W (41.321827, -81.676595). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.07 square miles (33.85 km²) of which 13.05 square miles is land and 0.02 sq miles (0.05km²) is water. The city is located on the Ohio River, which runs through the center of the city. Broadview Heights has a population of 2,816. It is one of the smallest cities in the state of Ohio, with a total population of 1,715. The town has a history of being the site of the Battle of the Bulge, which took place in 1881. It was the first city in Ohio to be named after a city, and the first in the United States to have a population over 1,000. It has been named after the town of Broadview, Ohio, which was founded in 1883. It also has been known as Broadview for more than 100 years, and was named for the town's first mayor, William "Bill" Broadview. The name Broadview was first used in the 19th century. It means "broadview" or "broad" in English, and "heights" means "hill" in the Spanish language. The current mayor of the town was William "Billy" Brown, who was first elected to office in 1964.

Parks and recreational

The Broadview Heights Recreation Center is located at 9543 Broadview Road, which is also the same building that houses the town hall. The population of the City of Laredo is 19,200, and it has a poverty rate of 3.2%. The city is home to the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Education

Brecksville-Broadview Heights students attend two school districts: Brecksville and North Royalton. There are three elementary schools, an intermediate school, a junior high school, and a high school in the Breck's system. There is one elementary school, one middle school, two junior high schools and one high School in the NorthRoyalton system. The city is also the home of Assumption Academy, a Catholic elementary school. Lawrence School, a school for children with learning differences, is also in the city. Brecksvile is a member of the Ohio Council of Public Education and the Ohio State Board of Education. It is located on the Ohio Turnpike, which runs through Ohio State University. It has a population of about 6,000. The school district has a history of winning state and national championships. It also has a reputation for academic achievement and sports success. It was named one of the top high schools in the U.S. by Newsweek magazine in 2013 and 2014. In 2015, The Washington Post published the list of America's most challenging high schools. The rankings were determined by taking the total number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year and divide by the number of seniors who graduated. The high school ranked in the top 4 percent of all high schools for this assessment. In 2008, the U,S. Department of Education recognized the school as an NCLB Blue Ribbon School. The boys' wrestling team won the 2015 state championship.

Another healthcare facility, the MetroHealth Brecksville Health Center, opened on the west side of the same interchange. A joint tax sharing agreement was made between the two cities. The two facilities are located on land within both Broadview heights and neighboring Brecksvile, with a joint tax share agreement made between both cities in 2012. The new hospital is accessible from Ohio 82 and the Interstate 76 interchange, as well as the Ohio 82/I-77 interchange. The hospital is located on morethan six acres and is accessible by Ohio 82, I-77 and the Ohio-76 interchange.
