Harrisburg is located in southwestern Cabarrus County at 35°1920N 80°3912W (35.322295, -80.653331). It is bordered to the north by Concord and to the west by Charlotte in Mecklenburg County. The City of Harrisburg has a total area of 11.15 sq miles, all land. North Carolina Highway 49 passes through the center of the city, leading northeast 57 miles (92 km) to Asheboro and southwest 13 miles (21km) to Charlotte. Charlotte Motor Speedway is 3 miles (5 km) north of the center-of-town, within the Concord city limits. The city has a population of 2,816. It is located on the banks of the Little River, which flows into the Cape Fear River. The Little River is a tributary of the Yadkin River which runs through the city. The town is located near the intersection of North Carolina State Highway 49 and North Carolina state Highway 49, which runs northeast and southwest. It also runs northeast through the town of Asheboro, and southwest through Harrisburg, leading to the city of Charlotte and Asheboro. Harrisburg is a part of the Collegeville Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes the cities of Concord and Asheville, as well as the towns of Fayetteville and Mount Airy. The Town Council is elected on a non-partisan basis every two years. The mayor is elected separately for a four-year term and is ex officio chair of the Town Council.
