North Carolina Highway 49 passes through the center of the city, leading northeast 57 miles (92 km) to Asheboro and southwest 13 miles (21km) to Charlotte. Charlotte Motor Speedway is 3 miles (5 km) north of the center-of-town, within the Concord city limits. The city has a population of 2,816. It is located on the banks of the Little River, which flows into the Cape Fear River. The Little River is a tributary of the Yadkin River which runs through the city. The Town Council is elected on a non-partisan basis every two years. The mayor is elected separately for a four-year term and is ex officio chair of the Town Council. Notable person

Gordon Tottle (1925 1987) was a professional ice hockey player. He played for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was also a member of the New York Rangers. He died in a car accident in 1987. He is survived by his wife and two children.
