Carolina Beach is a beach town in New Hanover County, North Carolina, situated about 12 miles (19 km) south of Wilmington International Airport. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 6,564. The community of Wilmington Beach was annexed by the town in 2000. The town has a land area of 2.45 square miles (6.3 km²), extending along the island from Freeman Park in the north to Alabama Avenue in the south. Carolina Beach was "wiped off the map" by Hurricane Hazel in 1954. It is located at 34°212N 77°5349W (34.036796, -77.896939). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has an estimated total area of2.5 square miles ($6.5 km²) (8.13%) of which 8.13% of it is water. In 2013, there were 2,296 households, and 1,253 families residing in the town. The racial makeup of the town was 98.94% White, 0.39% African American,0.50% Asian, and 0.17% from other races. There were 4,086 housing units at an average density of 1,813.5 per square mile (701.2/km²) The town is located on the National Register of Historic Places, with Lee Apartment Building and Newton Homesite Cemetery listed on the Register. The National Park Service has a pier at Carolina Beach.

Carolina Beach is located at 34°212N 77°5349W (34.036796, -77.896939).According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.5 square miles (6.5 km²).2.2 square miles of it is land and 0.2 sq miles (0.52 km²) of it (8.13%) is water. The town is located in the Coastal Plain National Park, which is part of the National Park Service. It is the only town in the state of South Carolina to be named after a person of African-American descent. It was named after Carolina Beach, South Carolina, where the town's name is derived from. It has a population of about 2,000. The population of Carolina Beach was 2,200 at the time of the 2010 United States Census, and 3,000 at the 2010 U.N. Census. The city is located on the Atlantic seaboard and is located near the tip of the Cape Fear River. It also has a small portion of the Atlantic Ocean, where it is known as the "Cape Fear River Estuary" The town was founded in the early 1900s by a group of African Americans who moved to the area to escape the Great Depression. It became known as Carolina Beach in the mid-20th century. The name was later adopted by the community as a nickname for the town. It now has a reputation for being one of the best beaches in South Carolina.

The town had a median income of $31,013 versus $21,241 for females. About 10.9% of those under 18 and none of those age 65 or over were below the poverty line.

Education

The New Hanover County Schools district covers Carolina Beach. Only Carolina Beach Elementary School, founded in 1937, is located in the town. Older students are assigned to Charles P. Murray Middle School and Eugene Ashley High School in Wilmington. The school district is part of the New York-Newark County School District. The district was formed in the early 1900s and covers New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and parts of South Carolina and Virginia. It is one of the largest school districts in New York state, with more than 2,000 students in the district. It also covers parts of North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland. It was founded by the state legislature in the late 1930s and the state's first school district was established in the mid-1940s. It has been in the same district since the early 1950s, when it was part of New York State. It closed in the 1970s and has since been replaced by the New Jersey-New York School District, which covers the same area of New Jersey and South Carolina County. It reopened in the 1990s. The town is home to two elementary schools and one middle school. The high school is in the Wilmington area, which also has a middle school and a high school. It opened in the 1950s. In the 1980s and 1990s, the school district added a middle and high school to the district's system. It now serves more than 1,200 students.

History

The town was "wiped off the map" by Hurricane Hazel in 1954. Reportedly, 362 buildings were destroyed in the town. The town was once known as "The City of the Stars" The town is now known as the Town of the Saints. It is located on the banks of the Mississippi River. It was destroyed by Hazel on September 14, 1954, in a Category 4 hurricane. The city was never fully recovered from the disaster. The  town was declared a ghost town on September 15, 1954. The Town of The Stars is now called the town of The Saints, after the town where Hazel made landfall on September 14, 1954 in Hazel's path. It has a population of about 2,000 people, and was once called the City of The Stars on the Mississippi River, before it was renamed the Town of the Saints on September 15, 1954 in Hazel's force and force. It was also known as The City of the Stars on September 16, after H Hazel made  landfall on that date. It also was known as The City of The Sisters and was known as The City of the Sister Towns, after its sister town towns in the Middle World and the County of The N Sylvania.

Carolina Beach Mooring Field - Located in the middle of the beach on the south side of Carolina Beaches and North Fisher Roads. The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher is located at the north end of Carolina Beach. The North Carolina Aquarium is at the south end of the beach and is open to the public. The Carolina Beach Pier is located on the north side of the beach and is open to the public as well as the South Carolina Sea Turtle Project at the north end of the beaches. The South Carolina Sea Turtle Project is based at the North Carolina Sea Turtle Park and is open year-round. The Island Greenway runs along the east side of the island and is home to the Island Greenway, a popular tourist attraction. The Atlantic Ocean is only a short distance away from Carolina Beach, and is accessible by boat from the North shore.
