Grand Ledge is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The city sits above the Grand River 12.7 miles (20.4 kilometers) west of downtown Lansing. By that time an estimated 60,000 to 70,000 people visited the Seven Islands Resort annually. This three-story fortress was built on the edge of Second Island, with the rest projecting over the rock. The second island was the center of the resort, with its hotel, and a causeway, and the third islands were joined with the causeway. The fourth, fifth, and sixth islands were left on the side of the village, and they were a picnic spot, accessed by picnic spot. By 1871, the village was incorporated by the city of Michigan, and in 1878 he built the Island House Hotel on Second Island. After a few years he returned east, and erected a village Grand Ledge. History

Native Americans who lived in the vicinity of the Grand River near the ledges were of Pottawatomi, Chippewa, and Ottawa ancestry. They dug clams in the river, mined coal on the river banks, hunted for deer, turkey, fox, and bear, and fished for black bass. In 1850 settlers named their village Grand Ledge, and erected a post office. By 1869, a railroad reached the north end of the village. In 1880 Julian Scott Mudge built a dam to reduce the risk of flooding from Grand River. In 1888 the Railroad Trestle or High Bridge was built to bring the railroad south of the river. By that time an estimated 60,000 to 70,000 people visited the Seven Islands Resort annually. A roller coaster was built on the Islands, probably the state's first. The Round House on the site has come to be called a double meaning, meaning to describe a picturesque structure built as an ornament, but without a real purpose. The Spring Flood of 1893 damaged the Round House in 1893. Although the building was saved, the mechanism that was to rotate its upper portions was so damaged that repairs were never initiated. The building has now been called Folly Folly, meaning double meaning to be a double, but to describe an ornament built as a picture-queen structure, but with a realpurpose of its own. In 1877 S.M. Hewings purchased the Seven Island Resort and in 1878 he built the Island House Hotel on Second Island.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.65 square miles (9.45 km²) of which 3.57 square miles is land and 0.08 sq miles (0.21km²) is water. The city is located on the Mississippi River, which runs through the center of the city. It is the only city in the state to have a population of more than 1,000. The population of the town was 1,071 as of the 2010 U.N. Census, down from 1,081 in the 1950s and 1,097 in the 1960s. The town's population was 1.1 million as of 2010. The U.K. Census estimates the city's population at 1,061. It has a population density of 1.3 square miles per square mile (3.5 square km²). The city's area is 3.7 square miles, or 9.25 km², with 0.8 square miles of land and 1 square mile of water. It was the first city in Mississippi to be named after a president, John F. Kennedy, who died in office in 1961. The first city to be christened after the Civil War, it was named after the town's founder, George W. Bush, who was born there in 1861. The current mayor, John W. McWhorter, was elected to his first term in 1974. He was re-elected to a second term in 1978.

Transportation

Abrams Municipal Airport (FAA LID: 4D0) is a city-owned, public-use airport located two nautical miles (3.7 km) north of the central business district of Grand Ledge. CSX Transportation now operates the original railroad built through the town as part of their Plymouth Subdivision between Plymouth, MI and Grand Rapids, MI. The railroad crosses the Grand River adjacent to the Ledges on a spectacular high bridge. One of the largest railroad bridges in the state of Michigan, it remains a sought after landmark for railfans and general tourists alike. As of 2022, one local freight and two through freights pass through town daily. The remnant of a branch line to Ionia begins here to serve a large grain elevator several miles north of town. A small yard remains active for local shippers, including a Lowes distribution center. The airport is accessible by road from Eaton Highway and is located 2.1 miles (3.4 km) south of Interstate 96, just east of M-100. Passenger service between Detroit andGrand Rapids, then provided by predecessor Chesapeake & Ohio, ended after April 30, 1971. The town is located on the Michigan Turnpike, which runs from Lansing to Detroit. It is also home to the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, which has a chapter of the Michigan College of Aeronautics and Astronautics. It also has a branch of the College of Podiatric Medicine, which is based in Ann Arbor.

As of the census of 2010, there were 7,786 people, 3,357 households, and 2,063 families residing in the city. There were 3,656 housing units at an average density of 1,024.1 per square mile (395.4/km²) The racial makeup of the city was 94.4% White, 0.9% African American, 0.,5% Native American,0.8% Asian, 0,1% Pacific Islander, 0, 9% from other races, and2.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.6% of the population. The median income for a household in theCity was $47,043, and the median income. for a family was $55,727. The per capita income for the city is $22,438. About 6.3% of families and 9.3%. of the residents were below the poverty line. The city is located in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers's National Defense Training Area, which is part of the Army National Guard and the Army Reserve. The U.N. State Department has a training center in the City, but no plans to expand it into the National Guard. The City is home to the National Park Service, which provides training for the Army and Air Force, among other things. It is also home to a number of military bases, including the Army Air Force Base, the Air Force National Guard, the Army Ranger Training Center and the Air National Guard Base.

Education

The Grand Ledge school district was established in 1886. It comprises an area of 125 square miles (320 km²) centered 10 miles (16 km) west of Lansing, Michigan's state capital. The total population of the district is 31,000. The school district, which is mainly in Eaton County, also covers portions of Clinton and Ionia Counties. The schools ofGrand Ledge district consists of two early childhood and kindergarten center, four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. The Grand L edge High School mascot is the Comet. The district is located in the eastern part of Michigan, about 10 miles west of the city of Lansing. It is the second largest school district in the state, after the Lansing Public School District, which has more than 30,000 students. It was founded in 1886 and covers Eaton County and parts of Ionia and Clinton counties. It also includes portions of Delta Township and Wacousta Township, as well as a large portion of Eagle Township. It has a total of eight schools, including four elementary and four middle schools, and a high school, with a total enrollment of 31,500 students. The high school has a mascot of the Comet, which means Comet in English and Comet in German. It opened its doors in 1887. The first high school opened in 1891 and has a current enrollment of 1,200 students. Its high school was built in 1894 and has an annual enrollment of about 1,100 students.

Rock climbing

Oak Park in Grand Ledge is one of the few places to climb in Michigan. The sandstone cliffs along the river have nearly 100 routes ranging from basic (5.2) to very difficult (5.13) The park is a popular destination for local climbers and rockwatchers. The park has a total of more than 1,000 routes, ranging in difficulty from 5.2 to 6.5. The most difficult route is a 5.12. The best route is the hardest, which is a 7.5-7.8-5.9-6.7-6-7-7 route. The easiest route is an 8-8-8 route that is 5.11-5-2-5, with a top speed of 8.5 mph. It is located on the banks of the Grand River, which runs through the park. The river runs along the east side of the park, and the park is on the west side, near the city of Grand Rapids. It's one of only a handful of places in Michigan to climb on the river, and it's a popular spot for rock climbers and hikers.
