It was the site of the World War II-era Battle of the Bulge, which took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It is the only city in the state to have been declared a state of emergency. The U.N. Declaration of Human Rights was signed by President Abraham Lincoln on June 14, 1868. The United States-Mexico Treaty of 1868 was signed on June 15, 1869. The Treaty was the first to recognize the rights of Native Americans to self-determination. The treaty was signed between the United States and Great Britain.

St. Johns is known as the Mint City and has been called "The Mint Capital of the World" The St. Johns Mint Festival takes place on the second weekend in August. World Trade Center is in the city's downtown area, and is a major international hub for trade and commerce.
