McBain began as a settlement around a sawmill in Riverside Township, founded by John McBain in 1887. A station on the Toledo, Ann Arbor and North Michigan Railway opened on August 27, 1888 and a post office with the name "Owens" opened on September 10, 1888. The city was incorporated as a village in 1893 and as a city in 1907. In the 2010 census, there were 656 people, 249 households, and 159 families residing in the city. The average household size was 2.29, and the average family size was 3.07. The median income for a family in the state of Michigan was $43.2, while the per capita income for the city was $19,356. The U.S. Census Bureau says the city has a total area of 1.25 square miles (3.24 km²), all of which is covered by water. The population of the city in 2010 was 656, making it the eighth-smallest city in Michigan by population. It is located in Missaukee County, in the northern part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, near the border with Michigan. The town is home to the Northern Christian School for Rural and Christian Education, a non-denominational, non- denominational Christian school. The school is located on the Michigan Turnpike, which connects to the Detroit River. It has a school mascot, the "Northerner", which means "northerners" in English.

History

McBain began as a post office in 1887. The post office was renamed McBain on September 17, 1889. The name was changed to "Owensboro" in 1891. The town was named after the town of the same name in 1894. The city was named for the town's first post office, which was opened in 1881. The current post office opened on August 27, 1888. It was renamed "Owingsboro" on September 10, 1892. It closed on September 25, 1894, and reopened as "Oswensboro Post Office" on October 1, 1891, with a new name, "Owsboro" The town's name is still used for the post office today, as well as for a number of other public buildings, including the city's public buildings and a public library.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.25 square miles (3.24 km²), all land. The city is located on the Ohio River, which runs through the center of the city. It is the only city in the state to have a population of more than 1,000. The population was 1,071 at the time of the 2010 Census, down from 1,082 at the start of the 1990s. The town has a history dating back to the 18th century. It was the site of the Battle of the Bulge, which took place in 1881. It has a post office since 1881, and was the location of the first post office in the United States in 1883. The current post office was established in 1891, and is located in the city's central area.
