The town hosted a heavyweight boxing match between Jack Dempsey and Tommy Gibbons for the undisputed world Heavyweight boxing championship title on July 4, 1923. The city has four distinct seasons, and is considered an arid climate. Due to the city's location just off of the Rocky Mountain Front, wind is a constant. The Well Done Foundation, which plugs orphaned and abandoned oil wells, opened a visitors' center in Shelby in 2020. On July 4, 1923, Shelby hosted a heavyweight boxing match between Jack Dempsey and Tommy Gibbons for the undisputed world Heavyweight boxing championship title. This event almost bankrupted the town of Shelby. The town is home to Welker Farms, an agricultural operation known for its popular social media channels. The farm is located near Shelby, Montana and is known for producing high-end cheese and other products that are popular on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. It is also home to the Great Falls & Canada Railway, which was established in 1892, at the junction of the Great Northern Railway and the Great Fall's & Canada Railroad. The Great Falls and Great Falls Railway was founded in 1894. It was the first railway station in the United States to connect the Great Plains and Great Lakes regions. It closed in the 1950s and was replaced by the Great Lakes & Great Lakes Railway. It reopened in the 1960s and is now located at the intersection of two major rail lines, the Great Divide and the Wasatch Highway. It has a population of about 2,000.

Summers can be dry and hot, and the area is prone to lightning, hail, and severe thunderstorms during the summer months. Fall weather is often unpredictable, with snow falling during October some years, and temperatures well into the 60s °F (10s °C) stretching until the end of November on other years. Due to the city's location just off of the Rocky Mountain Front, wind is a constant in the city. A weather station operated in the town from the late 1990s shows slightly higher temperatures than nearby towns such as Cut Bank. The town is located just off the Colorado River and is on the eastern edge of the Colorado Plateau, which is a source of natural resources for the area. The area is also prone to lightning and hail in the summer.
