Hamilton was founded by copper king Marcus Daly in the late 19th century. It was named for J.W. Hamilton, who provided the right-of-way to the railroad. The city is home to two microbiological research and production facilities: the government-run Rocky Mountain Laboratories, and a branch of the Corixa Corporation. NIAID (National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases) completed construction of a Biosafety Level 4 biohazard laboratory in 2008. Hamilton has one of the last remaining Kmart stores in the United States, the only remaining one in the state of Montana and the entire Mountain time zone. In January, 2022, it was announced that the Kmart will close in March, 2022. Hamilton is located at 46°1454N 114°935W (46.248412, -114.159852). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.57 square miles (6.66 km²), of which 2.53 square miles of land and 0.04 square mile (0.10 km²) is water. In the summer of 2000, Hamilton made international headlines when forest fires throughout the Bitterroot Valley filled the area with smoke and prompted the evacuation of many residents. In 2010, there were 4,348 people, 2,175 households, and 1,006 families living in the city. The population was 4,659 at the 2020 census, and the city's population is expected to grow to 5,000 by the end of the decade.

History

Hamilton is the primary city name, but also Pinesdale are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Hamilton. Hamilton was founded by copper king Marcus Daly in the late 19th century. It was named for J.W. Hamilton, who provided the right-of-way to the railroad. The Ravalli County Museum, founded in 1955, focuses on County history, natural history and art. Hamilton is home to two microbiological research and production facilities: the government-run Rocky Mountain Laboratories, and a branch of the Corixa Corporation. NIAID (National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases) completed construction of a Biosafety Level 4 biohazard laboratory in 2008. Hamilton has one of the last remaining Kmart stores in the U.S., the only remaining one in the state of Montana and the entire Mountain time zone. However, it was announced in January, 2022 that the Kmart will close in March, 2022. The Hamilton store will be the last Kmart store in the United States until at least the end of the 21st century, when it will be replaced by a new store in Missoula, Montana. The store is expected to open in the spring of 2015. It is located in the Bitterroot Valley, which is known for its forest fires. In the summer of 2000, Hamilton made international headlines when forest fires filled the area with smoke and prompted the evacuation of many residents. President Clinton declared a state of emergency in the area and dispatched National Guard troops to assist with fighting the fires. The CorixA Corporation was bought by GlaxoSmithKline in 2005. This facility has begun operations using highly-pathogenic organisms including the Lentivirus family of viruses.

The city has an elevation of 46.4 feet (14.7 meters) The city is located on the banks of the Red River, a tributary of the Mississippi River. The Red River flows through the center of the city. Hamilton is located near the junction of two rivers, the Red and the Little Red Rivers. The river runs through the centre of the town and flows into the river at a point known as the "Red River Viaduct" The city's name is derived from the red river, which runs through what is now the city of Hamilton, New Mexico. It is also known as "The Red River" or "The Little Red River", and was once called "The River River" by locals. The town has a population of 3,000 (3,000 in 2010) and is home to a public school system. It also has a post-secondary school, which was founded in the early 1900s. Infrastructure

Ravalli County Airport is a public use airport 1 mile east of town. The airport has no runway, but does have a paved runway. It is the only airport in Ravalli County. It was built in the 1930s and is a part of the Ravalli National Wildlife Refuge. It has a runway that can take off and land vertically. It also has apron that can land a small plane or a helicopter. The runway is paved with asphalt and has a paved taxiway that can fit a small aircraft. It's a public airport with no runway or taxiway. The only runway is a paved one that can handle a small airplane or a small helicopter. It opened in the 1950s and has been in use since the 1960s and 1970s. It can also be accessed by a paved paved road that runs through the town of Ravalli, about a mile from the airport. Its runway can handle small aircraft and a small number of small planes. It does not have a runway or apron. The county has no airfield or runway with a landing strip, but it does have an airfield with apron and apron which can be used as a landing pad.
