North Platte is a city in and the county seat of Lincoln County, Nebraska, United States. It is located at the confluence of the North and South Platte Rivers forming the Platte River. The city was established in 1866 when the Union Pacific Railroad was extended to that point. During World War II the city was known for the North Platte Canteen, a volunteer organization serving food to millions of traveling soldiers. In 1929, a black man shot and killed a white police officer. This led to the formation of white mobs combing the city, and ordering black residents to leave. In the 1880s, Buffalo Bill Cody established his ranch, known as Scout's Rest Ranch, just north of town. In 2010, the city had a population of 24,733. The population is expected to reach 23,390 at the 2020 census. The average monthly mean temperature ranges from 26.3 °F (3.2 °C) in January to 75.6°F (24.2°C), with a growing season of 139 days. On an average year, there are 3.8 afternoons that reach 100 °F or higher. History
North Platte was the western terminus of the Union Pacific Railway from the summer of 1867 until the next section to Laramie, Wyoming, was opened the following summer. Buffalo Bill Cody established his ranch, known as Scout's Rest Ranch, just north of town in the 1880s. The North Platte Canteen was one of the largest volunteer efforts of World War II, originating in 1941. On July 13, 1929, a black man shot and killed a white police officer. The black man reportedly took his own life, being trapped by a mob. This led to the formation of white mobs combing the city, and ordering black residents to leave. Fearing mob violence, most of North Platter's black residents fled. The city is now a National Historic Landmark. It is located in the U.S. state of Nebraska. The town's name derives its name from the North Platty River, which runs through the center of the city. It was established in 1866 when the Union. Pacific Railroad was extended to that point. The 275-mile (443 km) section from Nebraska City to North Plattte was completed in less than six weeks. In 1867, Congress had authorized the building of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1862, but it had been extended only as far as Nebraska City by the start of the summer. The next section of the railroad was opened in 1867. In 1880, Buffalo. Bill Cody set up his ranch in the town.

The record cold daily maximum is 15°F (26.1°C) on January 14, 1888, while, conversely, the record warm daily minimum is 80 °F [26.7 °C] on July 25, 1940. Arts and culture
Lincoln County Historical Museum contains a display detailing the history of the North Platte Canteen. Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park is a Nebraska living history park about "Buffalo Bill" Cody. The park includes his actual house known as Scout's Rest Ranch. The annual Miss Nebraska pageant, an official preliminary for the Miss America Organization, is held in the city every year. Every June, the city hosts the annual "Nebraskaland Days" The event includes parades, art shows, rodeos, concerts, and food events. It draws over 100,000 attendees every year and is one of the largest events of its kind in the state. The city is also home to the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. The museum contains a Prairie Village with local landmark homes and other buildings, including a Pony Express station and pioneer church among many others. It is located two miles west of U.S. Highway 83 along U.S. Highway 30. The town is also the home of the Miss Nebraska Pageant, which is an official Preliminary for theMiss America Organization. The event is held every year in the town and draws more than 100,00 attendees. It takes place on the last weekend in June and is the largest annual event of its type in the United States. It was founded by Miss Nebraska in the early 1900s and is held on the site of her childhood home. It has also been home to a number of other major events, including the opening of the University of Nebraska at Platteville.

North Platte is home to the world's largest rail yard, Bailey Yard. Passenger train service was discontinued in 1971. The Golden Spike Tower and Visitor Center is an eight-story building which overlooks the expansive classification yard and engine facilities. The tower and visitor center are open to the public year-round. United Express serves the airport with twice-daily service to Denver International Airport. There is also a door-to-door bus system available for residents of the town. North Platte Regional Airport is the only airport in the state of Colorado. The airport is located in the town's central business district and is located near the city's downtown area. It is currently served by United Express and the Denver International Airline with service to and from the airport twice- daily. The town is also served by the Denver Metro Airport with service twice-weekly to Denver and the airport's main hub, Denver International, on a route that links to the Denver and Denver International airports on the Denver-Denver International Airport route. It also has service to Colorado Springs and Denver-Lancaster on the Colorado Rockies route that runs from the town to the Colorado Springs International Airport in the Denver suburb of Laredo. The city is also home to a number of other tourist attractions, such as the Colorado Museum of Nature and Science and the Rocky Mountain Museum of Science and Industry. It was founded in 1881 and is one of the first U.S. cities to be named after a mountain. It has been named after the Colorado River.
