New Iberia dates its founding to the spring of 1779, when a group of some 500 colonists (Malagueños) from Spain, led by Lt. Col. Francisco Bouligny, came up Bayou Teche and settled around what became known as Spanish Lake. The Spanish settlers called the town "Nueva Ieria" in honor of the Iberian Peninsula; French-speakers referred to the town as "Nouvelle Ibérie" while the English settlers arriving after the Louisiana Purchase called it "New Town" The city is served by a major four lane highway, being U.S. 90 (future Interstate 49), and has its own general aviation airfield, Acadiana Regional Airport. The 2020 United States census tabulated a population of 28,555 in the city. In 2000, the population density was 3,088.8 people per square mile (1,192.9/km²) The city has a total area of 10.6 square miles (27.4 km²), all land. The city lies approximately 16 to 20 feet above sea level. There is a sub-tropical climate with an average temperature of 79 °F (26 °C) As of 2021, average high temperature is 79 °C (15 °F) and the annual low is 59 °F(15 °C). The 2019 American Community Survey estimated 29,456 people resided in city limits with the city limits in the 2019 census.

History

New Iberia dates its founding to the spring of 1779, when a group of some 500 colonists (Malagueños) from Spain came up Bayou Teche. In 1814, the U.S. government opened a post office in the town, officially recognizing the name as New Iberian. The town was incorporated as the "Town of IberIA" in 1839, but the state legislature amended the town's charter in 1847. In September 2008, Hurricane Ike flooded the city, flooding it under several feet of dirty, brown water. The current courthouse was built in 1884 on the present-day site of Bouligny Plaza, two blocks from the city's downtown commercial district. The city was the seat of parish government until 1940, when it was taken over by Iberias Parish, which is now part of the city of New Orleans. courthouse was completed on a landscaped lot in downtown New Ieria, at the site of the current courthouse, in the early 1870s. State senator Samuel Wakefield and his family fled to New Orleans after their son was lynched by a white mob in 1868. That courthouse served Iberius Parish until 1940; it was replaced by a new courthouse in the mid-1970s. The new courthouse is located on Ierius Street, near the New Iveria Street intersection, in what is now the downtown area of the City of New Imeria. It was completed in the late 1970s; it is on the same spot as the current city hall.

New Iberia is located in southern Louisiana, in the Acadiana region. The city has a total area of 10.6 square miles (27.4 km²), all land. The single largest denomination is the Roman Catholic Church, owing in part to the Spanish and French heritage of its residents. New Ieria's population had a sex ratio of 96.2 males per 100 females. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.6 males. About 24.9% of families and 29.5%. of the population were below the poverty line, including 40.8%. of those under 18 and 20.8! of those age 65 or over.

Economy

The city of New Iberia was the founding headquarters for Bruce Foods before their relocation to Lafayette. The city was also the birthplace of Trappey's Hot Sauce. Currently, the economy is stimulated by small businesses, agriculture, New Ieria station, Louisiana Hot Sauce, and Acadiana Regional Airport. The town is home to the Acadiana National Guard and the Louisiana National Guard. It is also the home of Acadiana University, which was founded in 1883. The community is also home to Acadiana State College, which opened its doors in 1885. The local economy is based on small businesses and agriculture. It was also founded by Bruce Foods, which moved to Lafayette in the early 1900s. It also has a history of being a hot-sauce-making town, as well as being home to a hot sauce factory in the 1950s and 1960s. In the 1990s, the town was home to Louisiana National Guardsmen, who worked on the Louisiana Gulf Coast. It has also been home to New Imeria station since the early 1950s, which is located in the town's central area. It's also the site of the Louisiana State Guard, which began in 1881. It currently has a population of about 2,000. The economy is also based on agriculture and small business, including agriculture and hot sauce-making. Arts and culture

New Iberia is home to fictional detective Dave Robicheaux and his creator, author James Lee Burke. The city hosts the Louisiana Sugar Cane Festival in September. Other notable festivals include the World Championship Gumbo Cook-Off, and the Books Along the Teche Literary Festival, which celebrates South Louisiana literature. The Bayou Teche Museum has exhibits on the history, culture, artists and industries of the region. New Iberian is also home to Avery Island, home of Tabasco sauce and claims to be the oldest salt mine in North America, in operation since 1862. In the Electric Mist, a movie based on one of Burke's novels, was filmed in New Ieria in 2009 and starred Tommy Lee Jones. The City used to hold a statue of the Roman emperor, Hadrian, until approx. 2008 when it was sold to a private owner. The Sugar Canes Festival celebrates the commencement of the sugar cane harvest, locally referred to as grinding. Sugar cane is a principal crop grown by New Imeria farmers. The town also hosts the El Festival Español de Nueva IberIA, which honors the area's Spanish heritage. It is located on the Louisiana Gulf Coast, near the mouth of the Red River, and is known as the "Gateway to the Gulf of Mexico" The city is also known for its seafood, particularly oysters, crawfish and crawfish, as well as its oysters and oysters.
