Incorporated in 1897, Long Beach lies in Southern California in the southern part of Los Angeles County. It is the 42nd-most populous city in the United States, with a population of 466,742 as of 2020. The city is known for its waterfront attractions, including the permanently docked RMS Queen Mary and the Aquarium of the Pacific. Long Beach also hosts the Grand Prix of Long Beach, an IndyCar race and the Long Beach Pride Festival and Parade. The Port of Long beach is the second busiest container port in the U.S. and is among the world's largest shipping ports. California State University, Long beach, one of the largest universities in California by enrollment, is within the city. The town grew as a seaside resort with light agricultural uses until 1902. The most famous amusement zone on the West Coast from 1902 until 1969 was the Pike's Island amusement zone, with rides such as the Sky Wheel Wheel and Cyclone Racer roller coaster. In 1950, the city became the main shipyard of the Navy, with shipyard and oil facilities and became the city's main industry. It was incorporated as a charter city in 1897. A portion of western Long Beach was originally part of the Rancho San Pedro. In 1843, Juan Temple bought Rancho Los Cerritos, having arrived in California in 1827 from New England. The boundary between the two ranchos ran through the center of Signal Hill on a southwest to northeast diagonal. He built what is now known as the "Los Cerrito Ranch House", a still-standing adobe.

History

Long Beach is the primary city name, but also Carson are acceptable city names or spellings, Cabrillo, Dominguez on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is City of Long Beach. Indigenous people have lived in coastal Southern California for over 10,000 years. By the 16th-century arrival of Spanish explorers, the dominant group was the Tongva people. In 1784, the Spanish Empire's King Carlos III granted Rancho Los Nietos to Spanish soldier Manuel Nieto. The City of Long Beach was officially incorporated in 1897. The Pike was the most famous beachside amusement zone on the West Coast from 1902 until 1969. Gradually the oil industry, Navy shipyard and facilities and port became the mainstays of the city. In the 1950s it was referred to as "Iowa by the sea", due to a large influx of people from that and other Midwestern states. The city was once the largest cattle ranch in the US, and early in the 1850s was the largest city in the state. It is now one of the fastest-growing cities in the U.S., with a population of more than 1.5 million. It has been the site of a number of high-profile incidents, including the shootings of two police officers and a jogger in the early 1960s. The current mayor is Democrat Bob Filner, a former mayor of Los Angeles and a former member of the California House of Representatives. He was elected to his first term in office in 2010, the first Democrat to serve a full term in Long Beach since the city was incorporated. He is the son of former mayor Jotham Bixby, who is considered to be the father of the present-day city.

Geography

Long Beach has a climate that can either be described as a hot semi-arid climate or a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. Days in Long Beach are mostly sunny, as in Southern California in general. Long Beach suffers from some of the worst air pollution in the entire United States. The water quality in the Long Beach portion of San Pedro Bay, which is enclosed by the Federal Breakwater, commonly ranks among the poorest on the entire West Coast during rainy periods. Long-term average levels of toxic air pollutants (and the corresponding carcinogenic risk they create) can be two to three times higher in and around Long Beach, and in downwind areas to the east, than in other parts of the Los Angeles metropolitan area, such as the Westside, San Fernando Valley, or San Gabriel Valley. The Los Angeles River discharges a large portion of urban runoff directly into the harbor water. This runoff contains the debris, garbage, chemical pollutants, and biological pathogens washed into storm and storm water. Because the breakwater prevents tidal flushing, this water is sometimes unsafe for swimming up to weeks each year. The city's beaches, can be subject to red tides due to this ecological stagnation, as well as ecological scrubbers dominating several coastal communities. Demographics

The 2010 United States Census reported that Long Beach had a population of 462,257. The racial makeup of Long Beach was 213,066 (46.1%) White, 62,603 (13.5%) Black or African American, 3,458 (0.7%) Native American, 59,496 (12.9%) Asian. The ethnic Cambodian population of approximately 20,000 is the largest outside of Asia. Non-Hispanic Whites were 29.4% of the population in 2010, down from 86.2% in 1970. The city has changed predominantly since the 1950s when the population was 45% White, 14.9% African American (U.S. Census), 12.1% Asian, 1,2% Pacific Islander, 20,6% from other races, and 5.3% from two or more races. As of 2014, the population of the city was 473,577. The median household income was $52,711, with 20.2 per cent living below the federal poverty line. The average household size was 2.78, and the average family size was 3.52. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.8 males. There were 176,032 dwelling units at an average density of 3,422.2, with 67,949 (41.6%) being owner-occupied, and 95,582 (58.4%) being occupied by renters. The homeowner vacancy rate was 2%. 195,254 people (42.2%) lived in owner-occupant housing units and 258,726 people (56.0%) living in rental housing units.

The city has several resident professional and semi-professional musical companies, such as Crystal City Theatre and Crystal City International Theatre. Sports

The Grand Prix of Long Beach in April is the single largest event in Long Beach. The Long Beach State 49ers baseball team has been playing since 1954. The Catalina Ski Race has been held annually since 1948 and features skiers from up to seventy teams from around the world. A 2.2-mile (3.5 km) long breakwater was built in 1949 to protect the United States Pacific Fleet. The city has commissioned a $100,000 study for this purpose and the study concluded that any changes to the breakwater would be too costly and could have potential impacts on the port of Los Angeles, the U.S. Naval Operations, Marina, and the Peninsula. Long Beach College has participated in national championships in women's volleyball, badminton and men's hockey. The school has also regularly appeared in men's baseball tournaments and has appeared in the NCAA's baseball finals seven times in the last 30 years. The American Basketball League team Long Beach Chiefs played in the newly opened Long Beach Arena during the 1962/1963 season. The Southern California Summer Pro League is a showcase for current and prospective NBA basketball players, including recent draft picks, NBA players working on their skills and conditioning, and international professionals hoping to become NBA players. The Congressional Cup is a one-on-one race regatta held in April. It is the only grade 1 match race regattas held in the US. Many of the winners of the Congressional Cup have gone on to win the America's Cup.

Long Beach is a full-service city that provides nearly all of its own municipal services. The city is supported by a budget of $2.3 billion, and has more than 5,500 employees. In the U.S. House of Representatives, Long Beach is split between California's 44th congressional district and California's 47th district. Long Beach has 279,735 registered voters, of whom 147,276 are registered Democrats, 47,615 are registered Republicans, and 66,857 have declined to state a political party/are independents. It has nine City Council members, who are elected by district, and the Mayor, who is elected at-large since a citywide initiative passed in 1988. The City Attorney, City Auditor, and City Prosecutor are also elected positions. It was first incorporated in 1888 with 59 buildings and a new school. Nine years later, dissatisfaction with prohibition and high taxes led to an abortive and short-lived disincorporation. Long Beach, California has two public institutions dedicated to higher education: California State University, Long Beach and Long Beach City College. Long Beach State is three miles away from the Pacific Ocean and is known for their resources of the arts, such as the Carpenter Performing Arts Center. LBCC is composed of two separate campuses; the Liberal Arts Campus is on the residential area of Lakewood Village, while the Pacific Coast Campus is adjacent to the Eastside neighborhood.
